Guest Speaker: Helena Duch, on The Role of the Home and Caregiving Environment in Early Childhood Obesity

Duch Talk Digital Signage

Dr. Duch’s research focuses on early childhood determinants of long-term health and the evaluation of parent, and classroom-based interventions that address developmental and health disparities, primarily in Latino children.

This presentation will focus on modifiable correlates to obesity in the home and the parent-child relationship in early life. Particularly, Dr. Duch will review the research on self-regulation, attachment and the home cognitive environment during the toddler/ preschool years and their association with child overweight and obesity, using data from large, nationally representative samples. In addition, she will describe the implementation of a parent-child physical activity intervention with Early Head Start families in Washington Heights and the innovative use of physical activity measurement tools with this population.

Brooklyn Food Tour Orientation Event!

Come join the student group for Food Policy and Obesity as we take an epic tour of some awesome food venues in Brooklyn! We will meet at 12PM on the steps of Hammer Health Sciences to travel down together or at Blue Bottle Coffee at 1PM for those of you already familiar with Brooklyn and want to meet us there. After grabbing some coffee at Blue Bottle, we’ll hit up Smorgasburg, Brooklyn’s infamous array of food stands on the East River. The day will end with a tour of The New York Distilling Company followed by snacks at The Shanty. Come meet your fellow students who care about food and explore the city at the same time!!

Where do I go?
Meet on the steps of Hammer Health Sciences (701 West 168th Street): 12PM OR
Meet at Blue Bottle Coffee (160 Berry Street, Brooklyn) 1PM

If you want to meet up with us later:
Smorgasburg: East River State Park (90 Kent Ave at N. 7 St.)
NY Distilling Company and The Shanty:79 Richardson St, Brooklyn

How do I register?
There are limited spots for this event so just make sure to register on the Meet and Greet day for student groups (August 28th) as well as on OrgSync (you will get more information about this during orientation). RSVP on Facebook will not ensure you a spot but is a good idea anyways so we can see how many people want to come! Students with an interest in joining the FPOP E-Board or contributing to FPOP over the coming semester, will get priority for this event. While this event will be held for first-year students, we’re happy to extend an invitation to returning food policy-focused Mailman students who would like to join us at The Shanty after 4:00!Image
